Secret Survivors & Mirror Memoirs: Screening and Discussion

Please join us at The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach for a screening of the documentary Secret Survivors: Using Theater to Break the Silence, a 40-minute film featuring survivors of child sexual abuse telling their stories, based on a theater project by Ping Chong & Co.

At least 20% of people in the US have survived child sexual abuse, according to the Centers for Disease Control (1 in 4 female-assigned-at-birth/”girls,” and 1 in 6 male-assigned-at-birth/”boys”), with new studies suggesting rates are even higher in vulnerable populations (e.g., disabled children, gender non-conforming children, etc.).

Yet survivors living at the intersections of oppression are too often left out of decision-making meetings by policymakers, philanthropists, and direct service providers on what intervention, prevention and services can and should look like in order to end child sexual abuse and support survivors’ healing.

A new project, Mirror Memoirs, aims to fill the gap. Founded by survivor-activist Amita Swadhin thanks to a fellowship from the Just Beginnings Collaborative, Mirror Memoirs is an oral history project supporting the healing and leadership of LGBTQ people of color who have survived child sexual abuse.

Come learn more about this project, and engage in a Q&A with Founder Amita Swadhin following the Secret Survivors film screening.

Seating is limited. Please RSVP in advance at https://mirrormemoirslb.eventbrite.com
